S.S. Yongala shipwreck is 1 of the Top 10 dive sites in the world & by some considered to be the BEST.
S.S. Yongala is located within the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in Queensland, Australia.
Departing from Alva Beach (where overnight accommodation is available) is located 90 minutes drive south of Townsville. It will take approximately 30 minutes by boat to reach the dive site.
S.S. Yongala sank in 1911 during a tropical cyclone. With the loss of all aboard, having created one of Australia’s most intriguing maritime mysteries.
Undiscovered for almost 50 years Yongala wreck, which is now a coral encrusted structure has become home to an amazing array of Marine Life including huge schools of barracudas, big Queensland Groper, giant trevallies, sea snakes, huge moray eels and manta rays, various species of sharks including the rare bull shark are only just a few.
S.S. Yongala lies on a 33 metre deep sandy bottom with the top of the wreck around 15 metres deep. Visibility ranges from 10—15 metres depending on the tide. With a strong current this dive site is better for experienced Divers.
Even after 100 years in the water is still in very good condition and you can still see the masts or even the toilets. Yongala is now protected and penetration inside the actual shipwreck is forbidden to avoid any corrosion due to the air bubbles.
The S.S. Yongala wreck is classed as an intermediate dive site, meaning it can be subject to changing conditions eg. wave height and currents.
Departing for Yongala wreck at 7.30 am and returning at approximately 2.00 pm.

Dive Experience Required: Open water Certification with at least 6 logged dives if you have less than 15 logged dives you must dive with a guide
Open water or adventure diver without deep dive training will be required to complete the PADI”Deep adventure Dive” during your first dive on the S.S. Yongala.
Novice divers with less that 20 dives should ensure you have refreshed your skills within the last six months and will be provided with a dive guide.
The more experienced divers can choose to dive with their buddy or take a guided dive tour from an experience dive guide.
Please Note: There is a government reef tax of $25.00 per trip payable on board on day of travel.
